Hi
I have a question about relative speed concept.
A river is 400.0 meters wide and flows from west to east at a rate of 35.0 m/min. Your boat moves at 100.0 m/min max speed relative to the water no matter which direction you point it. To cross this river, you start from a dock at point A on the south bank. There is a boat landing directly opposite at point B on the north bank, and also one at point C, 75.0 m downstream from B.
To reach point C,
a. At what bearing must you aim your boat ?
b. How long will it take to cross the river ?
c. What distance do you travel ?
d. What is the speed of your boat as measured by an observer
standing on the river bank ?
e. Draw a vector diagram showing the speed and direction
of the river current relative to the earth, the boat relative to the water
and earth.
Relative speed question?mortgage rate
(a)
Tan 螛 = Opp./ Adj.
Tan 螛 = (75 - 35)/ 400
Tan 螛 = 40 / 400
螛 = Tan ^ -1 (0?1)
螛 = 5?710 593 138
螛 鈮?5掳 42` 38?14%26quot;
(b)
For (a) above:
Distance to port C:
Distance = 鈭歔(75 - 35)2 + (400)2]
Distance = 鈭歔161,600]
Distance = 401?995 0248... m
Time = Distance / Speed
Time = 401?995 0248... m / 100
Time = 4?01995 0248... min.
Time 鈮?4?02 min.
(c)
From (b) above,
Distance = 401?995 0248... m
Distance 鈮?402 m
(d)
If the question means the speed of the boat to move down stream as seen by the observer then:
Speed = Distance / Time.
Speed = (75) / 4?01995 0248...
Speed = 18?656 947 32...
Speed 鈮?18?66 m/min.
